DCC chief gets 10% pay rise

Dunedin City Council chief executive Jim Harland will be paid $335,000 this financial year, about a 10% increase on the $287,000 salary and $15,000 bonus he received last year.

Mayor Peter Chin, chairman of the council's performance appraisal committee, confirmed the figure this week for the man the council employs to run an organisation of more than 600 staff.

Asked why Mr Harland had received the increase, Mr Chin said the figure was based on what the market was paying for chief executives of Mr Harland's experience, and the level of responsibility he had.

He said the council was satisfied with Mr Harland's work, and he had received 100% of a $15,000 "at risk" bonus following the past financial year.

Mr Chin would not give details of why that decision had been made, saying it was a personal employment matter.

The past financial year would also be the last time the bonus, paid on top of Mr Harland's pay package, was included, Mr Chin said.

The council was following other local authorities in dropping the bonus, as there were difficulties in assessing the elements that made up a decision of how much to allow.

"Those judgement calls are too difficult," he said.
