A Miovision camera collects traffic data near the corner of Great King and Albany Sts.

Dunedin City Council acting group transport group manager Richard Saunders said the council bought the cameras late last year.

The cameras produce videos to generate a traffic count that breaks down movements at the intersection, including whether vehicles go left, right or straight ahead, and classifies vehicles as cars, motorcycles, buses or bicycles.

Mr Saunders said the process was safer, more efficient and cost-effective than the old method of having someone at an intersection counting manually.

The information collected from Albany St will be used to provide information on the proposed bus hub on Great King St.
