DCC plans $300k ‘spruce-up’ at Musselburgh Rise shops

Musselburgh will be the first Dunedin suburb to get a facelift as part of an upgrade programme in which many suburban centres around the city will get a refresh.

The Dunedin City Council has opened submissions for feedback on its proposed changes.

City growth and advisory services manager Mike Cartwright said the Musselburgh shopping centre had not been refreshed since the 1990s.

"It is due for a spruce-up to ensure it continues to be a vibrant and welcoming place to live, work and visit," he said.

The proposed revamp of the commercial area centres on the intersection of Musselburgh Rise and Cavell St.

The work was budgeted to cost $300,000, he said.

The refresh includes new paving and asphalt on footpaths, new rubbish bins, seating, planting and a raised zebra crossing to improve pedestrian safety.

There would be no change to the number of on-street parks.

Mr Cartwright said he expected the work to begin in May or June next year and take "several weeks" to complete.

"We’ll know more as the project progresses, and will share more details when we have them.

"The works will likely cause some disruption. However, this is a small project and we will work hard to minimise any inconvenience to businesses and residents."
