George St enforcement improves parking, DCC says

Parking behaviour in George St, Dunedin, seems to have improved since a contractor was brought in to provide enforcement outside of business hours, the city council says.

The contractor was focused just on the upgraded section of the street after concerns were raised last year about illegal and dangerous parking.

"Anecdotally, it appears parking behaviour has improved since then," a Dunedin City Council spokesman said.

An upgrade of George St was completed in May last year, but this was followed by a pattern of motorists parking where they were not permitted, mainly outside of business hours.

An educative approach from the council about the problem had made way for enforcement by the start of August.

Enforcement in George St includes keeping a watch on parks that are free, but where time limits apply.

P5 and P60 spaces there, for example, were enforceable at all times, except on public holidays, the council spokesman said.

The city council is also proposing to introduce paid parking on Sundays in the central city.

"Any fees for Sunday parking would not apply on the redeveloped section of George St, as there are no metered parks, but enforcement would apply to free, time-restricted parks there."

Cr Carmen Houlahan had seen negative public reaction to the proposal of having paid Sunday parking.

She wondered if enforcement of just the time limits should be considered on that day.

Cr Kevin Gilbert described the feedback he had received about the possibility of Sunday paid parking — it was "about time" such a move happened, he had been told.
