The Dunedin City Council is asking for submissions on its proposed changes to speed limits close to a number of the city’s schools, as well as other
proposed changes on roads which have grown residentially.
Senior transport engineer Lisa Clifford said the council is proposing to reduce the speed limit to 40kmh from 8am to 9.30am and 2pm to 4pm near Arthur Street School, Kavanagh College, Otago Boys’ High School, Otago Girls’ High School and St Joseph’s Cathedral School.
Other work to improve safety in the area, known as the central city schools cluster, includes new crossing points and signs.
The same reduced limit is also proposed for school zones around Bayfield High School, East Taieri School, Fairfield School, George Street Normal School, Dunedin North Intermediate/Sacred Heart School Dunedin and Waitati School.
Extensions to the school zones for Kaikorai Valley College and Wakari School are also proposed.
A permanent 40kmh limit for Butts Rd, passing Logan Park High School, is also proposed.
The schools were identified based on road safety history, school rolls and the surrounding road environment.
Other roads where changes are proposed are Three Mile Hill Rd, Main Rd, Main South Rd, Brighton Rd, Gladstone Rd North and Puddle Alley.
Further changes are likely to be rolled out in the coming years as the council aims to establish a safe and consistent speed limit near the city’s schools.
Submissions can be made to the council by email, mail, in person or online, and close on November 20.

Simple why try and re invent the wheel, why not do what other countries do as a blanket near schools, install a sign 'school zone' with flashing lights that operate between 7:30 am and 9 am and 2:30 until 4:00 the speed limit drops to 40 km. It is pointless changing the speed limit for the whole day. Also waste of time changing the speed if it is not policed and enforced by police and judges, do it throughout the whole country.
