A slip opened up a 15m crack in Portobello Rd at Turnbulls Bay is expected to cause traffic delays for weeks.
The crack appeared about 7.30pm on Tuesday, with asphalt falling from a portion of the road between Frances and Moerangi Sts.
Dunedin City Council roading projects engineer Michael Harrison said the slip meant traffic would need to be diverted through the car park at Fletcher House for ‘‘a few weeks''.
The project would also add some costs to an ongoing $1.51 million project to build a retaining wall at Turnbulls Bay.
‘‘The material was going to be excavated and replaced as part of building the wall anyway,'' so extra costs would be relatively minor.
The project would also be delayed by a ‘‘couple of days''.
