A car with some serious pulling power arrived in Dunedin on Friday.

The Duesenberg Le Baron-bodied Sports Phaeton was bought new in 1934 by actress Carole Lombard, who was married to Hollywood star Clark Gable.

It was brought to New Zealand from the United States in 2011, by Robert and Lynette Duncan, of Wanaka, and restored to showroom condition.

''It's never too late to have a happy childhood,'' Mr Duncan said.

''I think of myself as the caretaker, not the owner. I'm just looking after it until the next person gets it.''

It was the only Duesenberg in the southern hemisphere, he said.

''It's never got old. Look at the curves on the side of the bonnet. It was made when craftsmen were cheap and technology was expensive. Now, it's the other way around.''

The ''Deusey'' was one of more than 250 vehicles which appeared at the 2013 Autospectacular at Dunedin's Edgar Centre yesterday, organising committee chairman Kevin Casey said.

Motorcycles, go-karts, hot-rods, vintage cars, street rods and military vehicles rubbed fenders with more unusual models, such as a 1936 Auburn cabriolet, 1936 Cord Westchester, a Plymouth Superbird, Lomax three-wheeler and an electric car built by Otago Polytechnic students.

The event also featured trade stalls and swap sites.
