The Brockville School community is pulling together after the school's principal was seriously injured in a crash.

Craig Hickford (43) was struck by an Isuzu four-wheel-drive utility while cycling in Main Rd, Fairfield, about 8.15pm on Sunday.

Emergency services tended to him at the scene before he was transferred to Dunedin Hospital in a critical condition.

Last night, he remained in a serious but stable condition in the hospital's intensive care unit.

The Ministry of Education said its traumatic incident team had been working with the school and the ministry was providing ongoing support.

"Our thoughts are with the principal and his family,'' ministry head of sector enablement and support Katrina Casey said.

"The school has a strong leadership team and is well placed to continue to provide a stable and normal environment for its students at this difficult time.

"Our local office has been working closely with the school to ensure that any needs for ongoing support are met, and will continue to do so as required.

"New Zealand School Trustees' Association and the Otago Primary Principals' Association are also providing direct support to the school.''

Mr Hickford became principal of the school in 2014.

He was previously the principal at Poolburn School.

He and his family moved to Poolburn from Christchurch after the 2011 earthquake.

He previously played basketball for the Canterbury Rams and was involved in coaching the sport.

Brockville School PTA president Christine Anderson said the school community was rallying together following the news.

"We are trying to run the school as Craig would want,'' she said.

"We are just giving the family their privacy at the moment and they know we are there when they need us.

"They need their time as a family.

"But it's normal school for the kids. We are trying to get it as normal as possible for them because we know that is what Craig would want.''

Mr Hickford had made a big impact on the school since becoming principal.

"You couldn't ask for a better principal,'' she said.

"We are just praying and hoping that he's going to come right and be back with us as soon as possible.

"We are all thinking of him and rallying around each other.''

Clutha-Taieri area response manager Senior Sergeant Al Dickie said police were still investigating the crash, which appeared to be a tragic accident, he said.

"We are waiting for reports from the vehicle inspector and the serious crash unit,'' he said.

He asked any witnesses to the crash who had not yet spoken to police to come forward.

Anyone with information was asked to contact Dunedin police on 471-4800.

Information can also be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555-111.
