The site was cleared in three days this week and construction of the apartments is scheduled to start in August.
TGC sales, strategy and marketing director George Hercus said the units went on sale in December and 23 had been sold.
He was somewhat surprised by the interest.
‘‘The price point and the location is pretty unique, so we thought they'd go pretty well. We didn’t think we would see them fly off the shelf like they have.’’
He said the buyers were from all over the place.
‘‘A lot of people from Otago and Southland, Airbnb investors, long-term investors, some parents of university students, quite a few parents of kids at boarding school in Dunedin that need somewhere to stay.’’
The one- and two-bedroom apartments were priced from $380,000 to $580,000 with 23 of the 36 units coming with a carpark.
He said the interest showed there was demand for these units.
He hoped the units would be built by March-April next year.
The previous building was occupied by accountants Moore Markhams, but they moved to the building next door at the end of last year.
