Simon Knopp (10), of Dunedin, enjoys his close encounter with moa bones during a visit to the Otago Museum with his grandmother, Gwennyth Anderson, also of Dunedin, at the weekend.

"I'd like to be a zoo keeper," he said.

The museum ran "Archaeology in Action" activities from 10am to 2pm on Saturday, including the chance to hold and compare moa and other animal bones, as part of the museum's contribution to New Zealand Archaeology Week.

Mrs Anderson, who chairs the Otago-Southland branch of the Archives and Records Association, was pleased archaeology was being promoted and explained to young people.

Museum programmes and events officer Suzanne Caulton said a greater variety of activities were being offered during this year's archaeology event for youngsters, in association with Archaeology Week.

A museum spokeswoman said the museum was working with the New Zealand Archaeological Association to highlight the importance of protecting our archaeological heritage.
