Police are investigating after a driver was killed in a crash in Waikouaiti.
The incident happened on State Highway 1 just before midnight on Thursday and involved one vehicle, police said.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman Andrew Norris said firefighters from Waikouaiti and Palmerston attended the crash.
An injured man was outside the vehicle when the first crew arrived, he said, and firefighters worked to resuscitate him until St John paramedics arrived.
The crash closed the highway between Palmerston and Waitati for much of Friday morning, with diversions in place.
The New Zealand Transport Agency advised it had reopened about 10.30am.
Police have reminded motorists to drive to the winter conditions, as roads were often icy in the morning.
