A New Zealander returning from Australia was locked up by Dunedin police last night over $4000 in overdue court fines.
The 35-year-old woman arrived at Dunedin International Airport on a visit to friends and family, but instead was welcomed by New Zealand police.
Senior Sergeant Brian Benn said the woman, who spent the night in custody, would be taken to the Dunedin District Court today to ensure payment of the outstanding amount.
The incident served as a reminder for those thinking of leaving the country or returning, to always pay their fines.

In December another New Zealand living in Australia was escorted from a cruise ship by Dunedin police and Customs officers.
The male, who was in his 50s, left New Zealand in the 1990s without paying around $3700 in reparations.
