Dunedin Masters Games sports liaison co-ordinator Geoff Simons, of Dunedin, will be a volunteer at the World Masters Games in Sydney next month, alongside 30,000 international competitors.
The global event runs from October 10 to 18, and Mr Simons - a sport event management lecturer at Otago Polytechnic - has decided to use a leadership award from the polytechnic to help pay for his trip.
The work will give Mr Simons a first-hand look at how the event is run, with benefits for Mr Simons' students and the organisation of the next Dunedin Masters Games, to be held from January 30 to February 7 next year.
The Dunedin event has in the past hosted 7000 competitors from New Zealand and Australia.
"I'll be picking up gear and dropping it off at venues - things like signage and everything needed for the sports.
"You've got to keep being part of events like these so you know the things that can go wrong and how to deal with them. Otherwise, you get it into your head that these things are easy to run."
