From a ''self-confessed geek'' to the Barcelona catwalks, Becky Levings' modelling career is taking off.

The 27-year-old Dunedin woman has been selected to represent New Zealand at the international Model Management 2016 Fresh Faces contest next month, continuing a recent run of achievements.

She became the first New Zealander to compete in the Bride of the World pageant in Beijing in 2014, and has secured photo shoots with several companies, including an Indian-based company for a shoot in Thailand last year.

''It's kind of crazy to think about it - in my early 20s, I wouldn't have really picked it at all.''

Miss Levings graduated from the University of Otago with a double major in management and design in 2011 and took up modelling in her final year to overcome shyness.

''From a self-confessed geek who sat in the back of the classroom trying to go unnoticed, it's a bit of a change around.

''Things are slowly starting to take off.''

Miss Levings, who works in customer care at Farmlands, received word she had been pre-selected for the Fresh Faces contest six months ago.

''I got busy with other projects and didn't really give it much thought. Then I got a call last week from the director of Runway Model Management NZ, Marie Rea, saying: ‘Pack your bags, you're off to Spain'.''

Miss Levings leaves on January 28 for the two-week event, which will include several photo shoots and a chance to take part in the Barcelona Fashion Week.

She had recently signed with a new company, Posche Models International, which planned a photo shoot in Shanghai within the next six months.
