Dunedin pupils from the New Zealand Modern School of Music scooped the pool of top prizes in the school's annual southern competitions, held in Gore late last month.

The pupils were among 200 young musicians from throughout Otago and Southland taking part in the competitions, which involved performance on piano, keyboard and guitar.

All are taught by Dunedin teachers.

This was the 23rd year the competition had been run, Dunedin-based convener Denise Dore said, and the standard of entries was very high.

"The competitions are a great chance for the young people to showcase their talents," Mrs Dore said.

Along with musicianship, the pupils also had the opportunity to show their composition skills in the "own composition" section, she said.

The top achievers among the Dunedin pupils were pianist Chris Glover (14), who returned home with several trophies, pianist Sam van Betuw (15), pianist Daniel Palmay (14), guitarist Joel Smith (12), keyboard player Adithi Alexander (9) and keyboardist Naveen Sivasankar (10).

"It was great to see them do so well," Mrs Dore said.
