East Taieri pupil Jack Cayford claimed a South Island title at the Kartsport Dunedin championships at Silverstream raceway last month.

Jack (10) was one of two junior members who flew the Kartsport Dunedin banner and brought home South Island titles.

Josh Bethune (11), of Dunedin, won the Vortex Mini Rox class.

Jack raced his Monaco chassis in the Cadet Racket class.

Hot favourite William Exton, of Nelson, dominated the first two heats and pre final earlier in the day, but a tangle cost him dearly in the final race allowing Jack to win his first South Island title.

Dunedin's Reef Jolly (9) was second.

It is a family affair in the Cayford team.

Jack's father, Chris, has raced for more than two decades.

He has scaled back his racing now he has Jack and youngest son Samuel (6) competing.

The East Taieri pupil will now focus on moving up a class and hopefully continue the same form heading towards the New Zealand School Champs in Dunedin next July.

Dunedin's second title came when Josh Bethune (11), racing his Arrow X3 chassis, became the first South Island champion in Kartsport New Zealand's newest class of Vortex Mini Rok.

It was also Josh's first South Island title and, now with five years of experience, all that track time is paying off.

The Balmacewen Intermediate pupil will also move up a class and hopes to gain another title at the New Zealand schools event next year.
