Dunedin writer David Eggleton has won the poetry category of the 2016 Ockham New Zealand Book Awards.

Mr Eggleton's winning collection The Conch Trumpet, published by Otago University Press, was praised by the competition's judges for its energy.

Category convener of judges Elizabeth Caffin said Mr Eggleton's work evoked images of New Zealand.

"He has an acute sense of the physical landscape as alive and present, but also of its history, in word and action,'' Ms Caffin said.

Mr Eggleton was awarded a $10,000 prize at a ceremony in Auckland last night.

Our journalists are your neighbours

We are the South's eyes and ears in crucial council meetings, at court hearings, on the sidelines of sporting events and on the frontline of breaking news.

As our region faces uncharted waters in the wake of a global pandemic, Otago Daily Times continues to bring you local stories that matter.

We employ local journalists and photographers to tell your stories, as other outlets cut local coverage in favour of stories told out of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
