A Dunedin primary school is putting in a mammoth effort to fundraise $35,000 for a new pump track at its fair this weekend.

Macandrew Bay School is finalising designs for a pump track and is hoping to get a large chunk of the estimated $100,000 raised on Sunday.

Fundraising committee parent Kim Meridith-Jones said it wanted a pump track in the school to increase the bike skills of the pupils and wider community.

"We have that bike track right outside now which is awesome and we love that, but we thought something on the school grounds is a little bit safer and ... more contained.

"It might help the kids build their confidence."

The track had been five years in the making.

Principal Nic Brown said the pupils had been involved in the process of designing the track the whole way through.

Deputy principal Jess McAuley ran a workshop with the pupils where they came up with a concept design, identified stakeholders, researched other pump tracks and created prototypes.

After getting Bike School coach Scarlett Hagen to finish the first design, the pupils gave feedback and added "bumps and lumps" for the skills section as well as created a map for its layout.

Some of the funding had been sourced from Bikes in Schools, Ms Brown said.

The school would buy about 20 bikes so all pupils could use the track.

The track would also be for the community, she said.

She hoped past pupils would come along at the weekend to use it.

The fair will start at 11am and go until 3pm.

Lots of food would be for sale and there would be live music as well as a chocolate wheel for entertainment, Ms Brown said.
