But not as colourful as the nursing staff on duty yesterday, who dressed up in Christmas scrubs covered in festive designs.
Registered nurse Corbin Bungard said about 20 staff were wearing the specially made scrubs on Christmas Day, to raise staff morale and to help take patients’ minds of their woes.
He said it was a tradition that started a few years back, when he worked on the hospital’s internal medicine ward.
"There were a lot of people staying in hospital over Christmas and the blue scrubs were a bit boring.
"Patients said they needed a bit more cheer.
"So we thought if we can’t get them home for Christmas, why not bring Christmas to them."
He said retired healthcare worker Kath Blair made an elf suit for him — which he continues to wear — and she had made about 20 festive scrubs for his new colleagues in the emergency department this year.
"She’s done an amazing job of making the scrubs from scratch.
"She does a lot of arts and crafts and she used to make her children’s clothing."
Staff had received great comments from patients about their outfits — many saying it had made their rough day a little lighter and brighter.
