Fire at Harraways

Internal fire alarms repeatedly rang out as firefighters backed up by seven fire engines and other vehicles last night fought a fire at the Harraway and Sons plant in Green Island.

Two blocks of Main South Rd at Green Island from Quarry Rd south were closed by police as firefighters using at least two high-pressure hose reels and breathing apparatus fought the blaze. The second floor of the building was filled with smoke.

A police spokeswoman said police had been called in at 9.50pm to help with traffic control.

Red fire engine lights flashed throughout the area and a cloud of smoke and steam rose from the plant.

The fire was contained and extinguished by 11pm.
