Senior Sergeant Darryl Lennane said two cars were involved in a ''nose to tail'' collision in Brighton Rd, Westwood, about 4pm.
A person in one of the cars received a cut to the head, Snr Sgt Lennane said.
A St John spokeswoman said five people with minor injuries were taken by ambulance to Dunedin Hospital.
