There were plenty of backsides, frontsides, caballerials, FS 540s, kickflips, ollies, carving and grinding on display at Thomas Burns skate park, but competition organiser Andrew Prouse said the best trick of the day was by open men's winner PJ Wybrow (18), who completed a frontside flip.
''It's quite a difficult trick - especially when it's done over the top of the pyramid, which is what PJ did.
''He was definitely the standout competitor of the day, that's for sure.''
Mr Prouse said 25 entrants this year vied for qualification for the New Zealand national finals. Each competitor had two one-minute runs to display their skills, which were judged on style, consistency and difficulty.
While the number of entrants had remained steady over the past decade, Mr Prouse was pleased to see a growing number of spectators.
Results: Open men's: PJ Wybrow (1), Jason McCunn (2), Hamish Morgan (3); 16 and under: Niwa Warner (1), Daniel Bridgman (2), Roscoe Moore (3); 13 and under: Scott Thomas (1), Kayden Reardon (2), Charlie Hurley (3).
