Better weather and a "marvellous" response from the public meant that yesterday's Otago Community Hospice street appeal was likely to raise significantly more than last year's, organisers said.

By 4.30pm, $16,000 had been raised in central Dunedin alone, well up on the comparable figure last year.

Community hospice funding and marketing co-ordinator Lyn Chapman said the stronger public response and two other fund-raising events - involving the Classic Hits radio breakfast team and an auction at the Outback Inn, Dunedin - could boost overall hospice fund-raising on the appeal day from $41,000 to about $80,000 this year.

The street appeal had been conducted throughout the greater Dunedin area and much of Otago, including Oamaru, Alexandra, Wanaka, and Balclutha.

The final outcome would not be clear until early next week, but she was optimistic that last year's $41,000 Otago street appeal total would be exceeded.

It was "absolutely fantastic" that the radio breakfast team had also succeeded in raising a further $10,000 for the appeal yesterday morning, including through a barbecue breakfast outside the Westpac Bank building in George St.

A further $10,785 was raised at last night's auction, with the $1600 overall top bid made for a 42 inch television set.
