The Mammoth Student Clear Out on Saturday resulted in a mammoth amount of new stock at the Salvation Army North Dunedin Family Store.

Manager April Elliott was forced to close the store for the day due to the amount of goods piled high in the shop, and lack of storage space.

Staff and volunteers sorted boxes of reusable items and bags of clothing yesterday, deciding what would go into storage for next year and what would go on display now.

Most of it would be sold next year to students looking to furnish their flats.

Bulkier items, such as beds and desks, were being kept in a storage facility until space became available in the store, while clothing and bedding were being packed away.

Despite the vast amount of items, donations were down 50% compared with last year and she blamed the recession.

Rather than donating it, students were "putting their gear in storage" for next year, she said.

However, with many students yet to finish exams, she expected more goods to flood the North Rd store.
