The 90-year-old stewards' grandstand at the Forbury Park Trotting Club has been roped off while structural engineers complete a report on its safety.

Club chief executive Ian Woodhouse said yesterday engineers were concerned about the corrosion of steel beams in the two-storeyed stand and, as a result, temporary supports had been put in place and the building had been placed off limits.

Mr Woodhouse said the building had not "been condemned as such" and he considered there was "no danger of anything happening".

The engineers inspected the building on Tuesday, and Mr Woodhouse expected it might take a week to get a written report.

"But we just felt out of caution, and out of a sense of responsibility towards people moving around down there, that probably it's best that there was nobody around it."

The stand has been in line for redevelopment, but the club is awaiting word from the New Zealand Racing Board about whether it would proceed with a feasibility study into the club moving to the Wingatui racecourse.

He was expecting that decision last night.

The stewards' stand, directly behind the birdcage, was built in 1919 and housed race day officials including stipendiary stewards, Judicial Control Authority staff, crash crew and media.

At the next two meetings, tomorrow and Tuesday nights, the nearby Otago Greyhound Racing Club premises would be used as an alternative.

The future use of the stewards' stand would be reviewed once the engineer's report was received.

The club's offices at the rear of the building were at "no risk" and would continue to be used, Mr Woodhouse said.

The club has just demolished its former totalisator building in Victoria Rd so the Dunedin City Council can build a footpath.

In November, the club will mark 100 years of harness racing at Forbury Park.
