A gala event is being planned for the weekend of July 5 and 6 to celebrate the official hand-over of the Harbour Cone block to the Dunedin City Council.
Harbour Cone steering group chairman Dave Cull said the council would officially take possession of the 328ha of farmland from a Maori incorporation, the Proprietors of Akapatiki A Block, on July 1.
At its first meeting yesterday the group decided on the gala, even though it would be "the middle of winter and cold as charity", Cr Cull said.
It has been agreed the gala day, details of which will be announced later, should be used as an opportunity for members of the community to register ideas about the use of the property.
