Six crews fought a large blaze in Dunedin for several hours last night after a three-bay garage caught fire.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) said they were called to the scene, in Rudd Rd, Halfway Bush, at 9.37pm.

Crews took almost four hours to get the fire, which occurred in a garage on the property, under control.

Firefighters from Roslyn, Lookout Point, St Kilda, Wakari, Willowbank and Dunedin attended the fire, Fenz said.

Firefighters required breathing apparatus while they fought the blaze, which was not resolved until 1.20am this morning.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
