Apparently, five into four does go. Four George Street Normal School pupils recorded top scores in five subjects at the University of New South Wales International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) examinations this year.
Kate Truman (11) received the top score in year 6 science, Sam Hewson (10) was top in year 5 computer skills and William Scharpf (9) received the top score in year 5 mathematics.
Not to be outdone, Boen Deng (10) joined six other New Zealand year 6 pupils who won two medals in the ICAS exams this year - for top marks in spelling and computer skills.
All four were delighted with their awards, but say it is too early for them to single out a likely career path.
The examinations, which this year attracted 156,289 entries, have been offered to New Zealand pupils for 17 years.
ICAS representative Shelley Wylie, who travelled to Dunedin to present medals to the quartet at a school assembly yesterday, said it was very rare for one school to have four medal-winners.
George Street Normal School principal Rod Galloway said it had been another excellent academic year for the school.
"Our children have participated in record numbers in many areas, won the ODT Extra! Otago spelling quiz and Dunedin mathematics competitions, and finished second in the ODT Extra! Otago Current Events Quiz."
