Dunedin deputy mayor Chris Staynes places the first present under the Dunedin Kmart's Wishing Tree, as the Salvation Army music group sings Christmas carols to launch the annual appeal yesterday.
Kmart aims to collect more than 45,000 gifts during the nationwide appeal, which runs until December 24.
Last year, 3344 gifts were collected in Otago, with gifts redistributed by the Salvation Army to those in need.
