Destynee Poutama had been working hard last week and was ready for a good night at a house party in Dunedin on Saturday.
"I let my hair down but it hit it me a lot more than I thought."
She had organised a ride home from the party but declined it, after it arrived at the party too early.
She left the party alone to go to town but only made it as far as the footpath in Gladstone Rd, in Northeast Valley.
Her only memory from the footpath was a "gentleman" putting a $20 note in her pocket and ordering her a taxi.
On Sunday morning, safely in her home, she kept recalling the image of the man walking away after he had helped her and thinking "you’re a nice man".
She had been trying to find the man to thank him by using social media but her search had been fruitless.
"I really want to thank him because it is a kind thing to do. I’m a complete stranger to him. He could have just said ‘you’re drunk’ and kept walking but he didn’t. He stopped, called a taxi, waited and walked away; I thought it was very cool."
The night could have gone "pear-shaped" without the actions of the mystery man, she said.
