An event to showcase Green Island is planned for next month, and the organiser expects a great big fun day.

The inaugural Great Green Island Get Together is being organised by local woman Lynda Davidson in conjunction with the Green Island community network.

Mrs Davidson said the expo, to be held at the Sunnyvale Sports Centre on Sunday, October 20, would be a fun, family-friendly day.

''It's aimed at helping celebrate Green Island's wonderful community, and showing everyone what is on offer.''

The day would feature stalls from local services and businesses, as well as food, activities and entertainment from local school groups and live music.

The idea was the brainchild of a core group of Green Island groups that made up the Green Island community network, including the Sherwood Trust, where Mrs Davidson was completing a placement as part of her third year of social work studies at the University of Otago.

The trust, with Neighbourhood Support, local police, the Green Island Business Association, the Green Island School, the Anglican Church and First Aid Solutions, founded the Green Island community network at the beginning of the year.

She said the group felt that although Green Island had a strong sense of its own identity, it would be great to bring everyone together and showcase what the area was all about.

Among those involved were community groups and services, sporting groups, Plunket, Chatbus, the Dunedin Timebank, the Lions catering truck and schools, with stalls promoting what they did.

Fulton Hogan had offered to manage the traffic.

Those attending would be surveyed to find out what support there was for developing a community centre for Green Island.
