South Otago High School pupils (from left) Jack Baxter, Lachlan McKenzie and Aiden Lyall, all 14, make the most of the hot weather at St Clair Beach, in Dunedin, during a school boogie boarding trip yesterday.

The temperature reached 29.7°C in Dunedin about noon, and Oamaru topped the southern regions with 31°C about 2.15pm.

Northwesterly winds pushed the temperature up, and gusts of about 100kmh pushed trees over in many parts of Otago and Southland.
