Gull dive

A stubborn seagull takes in a bird’s eye view of the Moana Pool diving pool from the lofty heights of a 3m springboard during its five-day stay at the complex.

The bird spent the weekend camped out at the pool after infiltrating the facility on Friday afternoon.

A Dunedin City Council spokesperson said attempts to shepherd the bird off-site failed.

"Our staff did try to lure the bird towards several sets of doors while it was inside, without success.

"The bird spent most of its time high up in the ceiling and gantry area while inside the facility.

"It managed to find its own way out on Tuesday morning and was last seen flying off into the distance."

The spokesperson was pleased to report avian overstayers were not a common issue at Moana Pool and there was no impact on pool operations.

A pool user told the Otago Daily Times they saw staff unsuccessfully attempt to coax the bird out using a trail of potato chips.
