They may be old, but they are most definitely not worthless.

Forno's Auctioneers had 22 lots of guns for sale yesterday, some from as far back as the 17th century, while others came from the World War 2 era.

Items for sale included a pair of circa-1680 Robert Harvey flintlock pistols, and a Joseph Manton fowling piece.

Auctioneer Barry Forno said the guns came from a private New Zealand collector, whom he declined to name. The collector had sold one item from his collection last year.

The items sold yesterday were of extremely good quality.

About 150 people attended the auction, and 80 bidders were registered.

The top price paid was for the Manton fowling piece, a rifle, which fetched $16,000. The pair of flintlock pistols went for $15,000.

Mr Forno was surprised by the $10,000 paid for a German officer's SS dagger with skull.

A Luger pistol sold for $4500, which Mr Forno thought would be a New Zealand record.

A World War 2 German horse-drawn ammunition cart sold for $1750. Mr Forno declined to provide a total amount paid for the guns.
