The wait for NCEA exam results is over, and compassion is being urged for pupils who have been stressed by the wait.

The New Zealand Qualifications Authority released the 2016 results online this morning.

The Lowdown - an online and text support service helping young New Zealanders cope with feelings of stress and anxiety - has seen an increase in the number of pupils getting in contact with concerns about results.

The Lowdown consultant psychiatrist Dr Siale Foliaki said significant numbers of young people around the country had been experiencing high levels of anxiety in anticipation of results and potentially feelings of panic, guilt and fear regarding the impact the results might have on their future.

Many might feel psychologically overwhelmed, particularly if they believe they may not meet parental expectations or be able to pursue their plans in 2017, he said.

``It's important for young people to recognise that it is normal to feel this way,'' he said.

``For those in their final year of school, these results might require a re-evaluation of plans for the upcoming year. Some might have been expecting to study at university but are worried that might not be the case any more.

``We should all remember the likes of Bill Gates, Walt Disney [and] Albert Einstein, all had difficulties with academic studies at high school.

``What made them successful was their determination and not losing belief in their own abilities.''

Friends and families must remember to acknowledge how stressful receiving exam results could be for many young people, and be available to listen to and support them during this time, he said.

``One of the best things young people can do is talk about their feelings.''
