Ice disrupts flights at airport

Dunedin Airport had its coldest morning of the year so far yesterday and ice on the runway caused delays and cancellations.

MetService forecaster Stephen Glassey said the temperature at the airport plummeted to -6.9degC at 8am.

The coldest morning last year was -8degC on July 12.

Airport spokeswoman Megan Crawford said ice on the runway prevented some flights from departing or arriving.

A flight from Auckland, scheduled to land in Dunedin at midnight on Tuesday, was delayed and landed about 11am yesterday.

The first flight out yesterday, scheduled to leave at 6.25am, was delayed more than three hours, she said.

An Air New Zealand flight from Christchurch scheduled to arrive at 7.55am was cancelled yesterday.

The flight scheduled to leave Dunedin at 8am left at noon.

A normal service resumed in the afternoon, she said.

A police spokeswoman said a ute crashed and blocked Bedford St in St Clair yesterday.

A tow truck moved the ute from the road and police were trying to make contact with the ute owner.

Motorists needed to take care on roads, as ice could be hazardous for drivers, she said.

"It only takes a split second to lose control of a vehicle in wet or icy conditions.''

Motorists should drive to the conditions and reduce their speed where necessary.
