Illness, weather hit ORC transport hearing

Sickness and weather problems dogged the Otago Regional Council's hearing into proposed changes to the council's regional transport plan yesterday, leaving only four organisations with representatives making submissions in person.

The proposed plan changes cover vehicle standards and accessibility, further integration of contracted and commercial services, plus customer service and driver training.

Twenty-one people made submissions to the plan changes, with eight planning to give their views in person.

However, four did not make it, including those representing people with disabilities.

The Waikouaiti Coast Community Board, Otago Polytechnic Students Association and the Green Party spoke to their submissions, raising issues including the need for bike racks on buses, integrated fares, more regular services and a free bus for students.

Their recommendations will be considered by the policy and resource planning committee on September 4.

The council will then make a decision on September 17.
