Northeast Valley residents involved with Transition Valley 473 are planning a community orchard in a project called "1000 Fruit and Nut Trees".

On Saturday April 24, Jason Ross from Sutherland Nursery will visit two sites in Northeast Valley and two in Pine Hill to meet interested locals, before fruit and nut tree planting in June.

He will explain how to choose suitable species and cultivars for a site and how to prepare for planting. This is a chance for locals to share their knowledge and give feedback on the proposed community orchard plantings.

The timetable is:
Noon: Chingford Park, by the sports ground; then at the southeast corner of the park, past the old swimming pool, near the stream;
1pm: top of Calder St, NEV.
2pm: Wilkinson St Playground, Pine Hill
3pm: Pine Hill Park

Tree species being considered are hazelnut, chestnut, walnut, mulberry, apple, pear, plum, currants. If you have produce made from any of these, please bring along a little to share and your recipe. Cuttings to share would also be appreciated.

Final decisions about what to plant will be made after these workshops and the trees will be planted in June. If you have any questions or comments, please contact Philippa on 473-9293.
