It's a 'definite issue' in some NZ homes

A mould decontamination specialist says there is a ''definite issue'' with mould in New Zealand homes and that mould is affecting some people quite badly.

Decontamination Medix mould specialist Sean Johnson, also owner of Jae's Dunedin, said most problems were caused by poor ventilation, technical problems with the house, leaks or moisture left after flooding.

He said there were many kinds of mould and varying degrees of sensitivity.

''Respiratory is one of the first ones [symptoms] you notice because mould spores are very, very small so it can affect your breathing and asthma and things like that.''

Other symptoms include itchiness and a bleeding nose.

The most dangerous type is black mould - Stachybotrys -that can cause flu-like symptoms.

Mould thrives in warm, humid conditions.

Mr Johnson has been doing a lot of work in Christchurch, where liquefaction under homes was causing mould in the buildings.

''There are some people who are real[ly] sick.''

The best way to keep mould at bay was to ensure there was no water under the house or in the roof, wet areas were well ventilated and any flood damage was properly cleaned, he said.
