Be prepared.

The old scouting motto has never been more relevant for a group of young Dunedin scouts who are about to head to a national jamboree in an area with earthquake activity.

Members of the Pitcairn Scout Group in Belleknowes spent yesterday afternoon creating emergency kits, called rumble packs, to take with them when they do activities.

Group leader Christina McConnell said the 21st New Zealand Scout Jamboree would be held in Renwick, near Blenheim and Seddon, between December 29 and January 7.

In light of the recent earthquakes in the area, all attending scouts were taking rumble packs so they could look after themselves for at least 12 hours if another major event occurred.

The packs contain food, water, first aid, torches, emergency blankets, toilet paper and even small games to keep them going until help arrive.

Mrs McConnell said it was the first time scouts had been asked to bring rumble packs to a national jamboree.

''Being prepared is part of being a scout,'' she said.

The Pitcairn Scouts would be among about 30 from Dunedin groups to attend the 3000-strong jamboree, she said.
