A gutted SUV on Smaills Beach, in Dunedin, appears to have come off the cliff face above, before landing on the rocks on the beach.

A Dunedin City Council spokeswoman said the council had not been aware the vehicle was on the beach but staff had managed to contact the vehicle’s owner last night.

‘‘He will arrange for the vehicle to be removed.’’ The Otago Regional Council had been notified, she said.
