Otago Community Hospice marketing and funding manager Stanley Hebden (second from left) puts down a ''scrum'' with Kaikorai players (from left) Johnny Appleby (24), Logan Moore (23) and Tony Ensor (24) after the team donated $1000 to the charity...

Rather than spending $1000 of their end-of-season ''team funds'' on booze and parties, the Kaikorai premier rugby team has given it away.

The team decided giving the money, from a fundraising evening, to the Otago Community Hospice would be a better option than spending it on ''five kegs''.

Kaikorai team member Logan Moore (23) said a fundraising quiz attracted more guests than expected and, as a result, ''we made more money than we thought''.

''We just wanted to give back to the community.

''You just feel a little bit better about yourself,'' Mr Moore said.

Team member Tony Ensor said, ''We just wanted to do something nice''.

The winning quiz team got to choose who the money would go to.

Hospice marketing and funding manager Stanley Hebden said the donation was significant.

''To keep the services for free, we've got to raise a certain amount of money. So that [$1000] is significant.''

The money would go towards meals, education and other services, Mr Hedben said.

Kaikorai premier rugby coach Andrew Hunter said the donation was ''all done of their [players'] own volition'' and there was no input from club management.

It was good that a group of young guys would do something like this, Mr Hunter said.

The team planned to make a donation to a charity annually.
