KiwiRail Hillside workshops operations lead Michael Beaufort stands in front of a war memorial wall commemorating those who worked at the workshops and were casualties of World Wars 1 and 2.
The wall has been relocated to a plinth outside the workshops’ new offices in a new memorial garden.
Mr Beaufort said he and production planner Peter Buckley did not want to let the wall die.
They continued holding annual services in front of it on Anzac Day after the workshops stopped in 2012. The service would be at the new location this year.
Senior project manager Nathan Lewis said the wall was relocated to a safer, more functional and accessible space as part of recent redevelopments.
The site would have a grassed area with seating that would be more appropriate for a respectful service.
The memorial stones were in a concrete precast that would last for 100 years, he said.
