Long wait for scans

Some southern patients are waiting up to 11 months for an ultrasound scan, a Southern District Health Board committee heard this week.

Board Crown monitor Jan White asked what conditions could wait so long for a scan. A report to the hospital advisory committee said the board was checking the waiting list to ensure each patient needed an ultrasound.

Staff were trying to establish the reasons for the increased demand.

The wait time of 26 to 48 weeks was for routine scans.

Urgent scans were performed the same day, and semi-urgent ones within 16 weeks.
