Andersons Bay School in Dunedin is about to undergo its largest redevelopment in more than 30 years.

Board of trustees chairwoman Jackie Dunham said tenders had just been submitted for the redevelopment of the school's library and teaching spaces, and the creation of an information and communications technology suite.

"We will redevelop the current teaching spaces to allow teaching and learning to happen in a more modern way. It means classes can be broken into smaller groups, but the teacher can still be visible and part of the classes."

Mrs Dunham said funding for the project had come from a mixture of sources, including the Ministry of Education, but would not say how much the development would cost because the tender process was still active.

The school's roll was about 230 and the development was aimed at future-proofing the school for a projected increase.

It was the first major project at the school since the mid-1970s.

Much of the work would be centred around redeveloping existing buildings and the expansion of others, she said.

Work is expected to begin in October and it is hoped construction will be completed in time for the start of the 2013 school year.
