Bags for Good is spreading the message in Dunedin that reusable bags are fun and easy to make. Every Tuesday this month, the group is running a project at South Dunedin Community Pop Up teaching people to make bags.

Bags for Good is a project of the Plastic Free Dunedin Trust, which aims to make reusable bags to reduce the use of plastic.

Bags for Good co-ordinator Fiona Jenkin said the pilot project aimed to allow the opportunity for people to learn to sew.

‘‘Being able to sew is an amazing skill . . . ‘‘You can make things and fix things and make bags, so you don’t have to use plastic.’’

Mrs Jenkin said the sewing bees aimed to bring like-minded people together. ‘‘I hope people can learn to have the skills to do it themselves,’’ she said.

She said the bags were made using material recycled mostly from old curtains and duvet covers. The sessions were free. ‘‘We have already had people dropping off free materials.’’

Mrs Jenkin said over the five weeks they hoped to get a good group of interested people together and see what happened.

It would be good to see these sessions happening throughout wider Dunedin, she said. The bags made at the hub would be used for people to take their books home in with the aim of them being returned.
