Students were subjected to a "tsunami'' at Moana Pool last night.
The event, The Science of Swimming - Geology'', was part of the 2016 New Zealand International Science Festival.
Twenty children floated on fluorescent orange and pink lilos to mimic continents. Water then exploded from the pool to create a tsunami.
The children joined hands and formed a super continent, before the water forced them into the northern continent of Laurasia and the southern continent of Gondwanaland, Otago Museum Discovery World co-ordinator Amadeo Enriquez-Ballestero said.
Gabriel Vink (12), of Dunedin, said the water felt like someone was tickling his feet.
He fell off his lilo and would definitely do it again, he said.
Amber Munro (8), of Christchurch, said she thought it was a bit scary when the water exploded because she was about to fall off her lilo.
"It was really cool.''
Mr Enriquez-Ballestero said he wished he had been taught geology that way.
