Police were called to the scene on Eglinton Rd at about 7.30pm.
A witness told the Otago Daily Times she carried out CPR on a man before paramedics arrived.
"He passed while I was giving CPR and then the medics came and tried to revive him."
Just after 10pm police issued a statement saying the man had died following the incident.
Cordons were in place while police conducted a scene examination and these were likely to remain in place overnight.
Police wanted to hear from anyone who saw what happened who has not yet spoken to them.

Earlier this evening there was a heavy police presence at the scene, along with at least two ambulances, and Fire and Emergency personnel.
Emergency services have blocked Eglinton Rd and motorists were turned around and forced to take an alternative route.
