Man faces arson charge after fire

A 55-year-old Dunedin man has been charged with arson, following a serious house fire on Saturday night.

Five fire appliances were called to a house in Mulford St, Concord, shortly before 8pm.

The back part of the house was extensively damaged.

A police spokeswoman said nobody was in the property at the time.

The alleged offender remains in police custody and is expected to appear in the Dunedin District Court today.

The spokeswoman said police were not looking for anyone else in relation to the fire.

Fire investigator Mike Cahill, of Invercargill, said the house fire had been deliberately lit and a Dunedin Police forensics team took over the scene investigation yesterday.

Police also interviewed witnesses in neighbouring houses.
