Man fired BB gun in courtyard

A Dunedin man shooting a realistic BB gun in his courtyard caused a scare in a central city suburb.

Police were called to a York Pl house at 4.15pm on Monday after a member of the public reported a man was using a firearm in his backyard.

Officers tracked down a 21-year-old man who admitted shooting an airsoft replica pistol that fired BB pellets in the courtyard of his property, Sergeant Matthew Lee said.

The man told police he believed the replica pistol was faulty and he was testing it.

The man was advised it was not a good idea to use the pistol in a built-up residential area.

Sgt Lee said police were called to Bond St about an hour later after another firearm scare.

A member of the public reported a man was illegally in possession of a firearm and other offensive weapons.

Police located and arrested a 28-year-old man, but no firearms or weapons were located.

"The male denied having access to any weapons and advised he uses this verbal threat as a form of protection," Sgt Lee said.

The man was due to appear in court yesterday charged with breaching his bail conditions. — APL
